Technical interview — You are not leading the interview. They are.

It could be tempting to talk as much as you’d like, but this could also backfire.

With more than 6 years of experience, I had the opportunity to lead a lot of interviews. During this whole process, I noticed one recurring scenario that most often leads to failure. We’ll talk about that today.

The interviewer has to ask as many relevant questions as possible within a limited timeframe.

The main goal of the technical interview is to make sure that you are fit for the team on both technical and human aspects.

The interviewers will usually need to answer two questions:

  • Does the candidate match the expectations for the role
  • Do I see myself working with this person

To answer this question, interviewers usually have an hour to ask as many relevant questions as possible within a limited timeframe.

On the candidate side, it seems obvious that their goal is to provide as much information as possible to convince the interviewers within this timeframe. But it is crucial not to fall into the trap of overdoing it.
